VARANASI AND SURROUNDING DISTRICTS
The best known brocade silk saree in India, woven in Varanasi since at least the Mughal era, built on a katan, kora or organza ground and patterned with gold or silver zari.

Banarasi weaving is usually traced to the fourteenth or fifteenth century, and its zari brocade technique to Persian artisans who arrived in the Mughal period and brought floral motifs and metal-thread weaving with them. Varanasi grew into a major silk centre from there, and the name is now GI protected: a saree woven outside Varanasi and its neighbouring districts cannot legally be sold as Banarasi. The individual work styles woven into a Banarasi ground, kadhwa, jangla, tanchoi, meenakari and the rest, are covered on this shop's weaves glossary.
Region: Varanasi and surrounding districts, Uttar Pradesh
GI status: GI tagged: only silk brocade woven in Varanasi and its neighbouring districts may legally be sold as Banarasi.

Best season: Winter. Cool evenings. Indoor, air-conditioned halls
The weight holds a Nivi drape's pleats without help; a plain silk or velvet blouse in one of the saree's own colours keeps the brocade the obvious focus.
