GADWAL
A cotton-bodied saree with a silk, zari-rich border and pallu woven separately and interlocked onto the cotton, so light it is said to fold into a matchbox.

Gadwal is woven in Gadwal, in the Jogulamba Gadwal district of Telangana, and is built from two different fabrics joined at the loom: a plain cotton body and a rich, zari-heavy silk border and pallu. The saree carries genuine ceremonial weight in the region too; a Gadwal is traditionally used to adorn the deity at the start of the Brahmotsavam festival at Tirupati.
Region: Gadwal, Jogulamba Gadwal district, Telangana
GI status: GI tagged for Telangana under the Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999.
Best season: Summer and warm weather, given the cotton body
Gadwal's light cotton body drapes easily for a first-timer, and the contrast border shows well in a standard Nivi drape without needing a heavily worked blouse to match.
