VARANASI (BANARAS)
Pure mulberry silk, warp and weft both tightly twisted filament, the plain dense ground that almost all fine Banarasi brocade is woven on.

In Varanasi weaving vocabulary, 'katan' names the twisted yarn itself before it even becomes a saree. Two or more mulberry silk filaments are twisted tightly together and used for both warp and weft, which gives a smooth, dense, lustrous cloth that can carry heavy zari without sagging. When a shop says 'pure Banarasi silk' without naming the fabric, they usually mean katan; it is the traditional bridal silk of Banaras.
Region: Varanasi (Banaras), Uttar Pradesh
GI status: Katan is the base cloth of the GI-tagged Banarasi tradition rather than a separately registered GI product.
Best season: Winter. Cooler evenings. Indoor, air-conditioned venues
The weight of katan makes pleats fall cleanly and stay put through a long function; a plain or lightly worked blouse lets the ground cloth's own sheen carry the look.
