PATAN
A double ikat silk saree from Patan in Gujarat, where both the warp and weft threads are tie-dyed before weaving so the pattern is planned months in advance and appears identically on both faces of the cloth.

Patola is woven, usually in silk, by resist-dyeing both the warp and weft threads before they ever reach the loom, a technique called double ikat. Patan in North Gujarat is its historic and GI-protected home, tagged in 2013. Because the entire pattern has to be planned and dyed into the thread before weaving even starts, a Patola is one of the most time-consuming sarees made anywhere in India.
Region: Patan, Gujarat
GI status: GI tagged since 2013.

Best season: Any season indoors; best in winter or an air-conditioned setting given the weight
Patola's body suits a simple Nivi drape that lets the geometric ikat pattern read clearly rather than disappearing into heavy pleating; a plain silk blouse in one of the saree's own colours is the traditional pairing.
