WEST BENGAL
The everyday handloom cotton saree of Bengal: a fine, light cotton woven on a handloom and finished with a starch of sago or rice water for its characteristic crisp sheen.

Tant is Bengal's daily-wear cotton saree, woven from locally sourced, finely spun cotton on a handloom, with a thicker, more decorative border and pallu than its plainer body. Its glossy, crisp finish comes from a starch applied after weaving, not from the fibre itself, which is why a new Tant feels stiffer than one that has been washed a few times.
Region: West Bengal, notably Shantipur, Fulia and Dhaniakhali
GI status: Not itself a single GI product; several named Bengal weaving clusters that produce tant, including Tangail-style saris, carry their own GI registrations.
Best season: Summer and humid weather. Year-round as daily wear in Bengal
Tant's crisp new starch holds a defined pleat; as it softens with wear, drape a little more snugly. A contrast blouse in the border colour is the traditional Bengali pairing.
