UPPADA VILLAGE
A featherlight silk saree from the coastal village of Uppada in Andhra Pradesh, woven with the jamdani technique so the motif looks the same on both faces of the cloth.

Jamdani-style weaving arrived in Uppada, a coastal village in Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari district, in the eighteenth century and was reinterpreted there in silk rather than cotton, locally called Ani Butta weaving after the loom's shed (ani). The craft was GI registered as Uppada Jamdani Sarees in 2009.
Region: Uppada village, East Godavari district, Andhra Pradesh
GI status: GI tagged since 2009, registered as Uppada Jamdani Sarees.
Best season: Suitable across most seasons given its light weight
Its light weight makes Uppada easy to drape and comfortable to wear for a long day; a plain or lightly worked blouse suits its understated, even-sided motif.
